.eu is a country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) proposed by EURid, who
is currently in contractual negotiations with the Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers (ICANN). The new ccTLD is intended for businesses and individuals
residing in the European community. .eu is expected to open the Sunrise Period
in the 4th quarter of 2005. Pre-registrations are currently not available, as
EURid has not yet accredited any registrars to pre-register names in
the .eu ccTLD.
What are the benefits of .eu?
The ccTLD .eu is expected to improve the interoperability of trans-European networks,
create higher visibility in the virtual networks and combat the digital divide
with neighboring countries. .eu is also expected to be a building block for e-commerce,
as well as, bring the European community closer together. This sense of community
is believed to be a major force the future popularity of .eu registrations and
use of the ccTLD in general.
Who is eligible to register a .eu domain name when it becomes
available?
The following may apply for a .eu domain name:
Undertakings having their registered office, central administration
or principal place of business with the European Community.
Organizations established within the European Community
without prejudice to the application of national law.
Natural persons residing within the European Community.
If a registrant does not meet this criteria and attempts to register
a .eu domain name, the registration request may be denied or,
